Mental Health Awareness Month May

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Since its inception in 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been a time to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. This year, Mental Health America (MHA) is focusing on the theme of "A World of Difference: Creating a Culture that Cares for Mental Well-being." MHA's goal is to create a world where everyone has access to the resources and support they need to live mentally healthy lives.

Tips for Engaging in Respectful Conversations Around Mental Health

There are a few things you can do to make sure you're having a respectful conversation about mental health:

  • Use person-first language. This means referring to people with mental illness as "people with mental illness" instead of "mentally ill."
  • Avoid using stigmatizing language. This means not using words like "crazy" or "psycho."
  • Be empathetic. Try to understand what the person is going through and how they're feeling.
  • Be supportive. Let the person know that you care and that you're there for them.
  • Be patient. It may take time for the person to open up.
