Early Adulthood BMI Linked to Cardiovascular Disease Risk

Low BMI Linked to Higher Mortality Risk

A study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that people with a low body mass index (BMI) in early adulthood had a doubled risk of total death hazard compared to those with a normal BMI. The study followed over 2 million Swedish adults for an average of 42 years.

High BMI Linked to Increased Cardiovascular Disease Risk

The same study also found that participants with a BMI over 30 kgm² during early adulthood faced a 58% higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This risk remained elevated even after accounting for other factors such as smoking, alcohol use, and physical activity.

Higher BMI Associated with Elevated CVD Incidence

A higher BMI in early adulthood was associated with elevated incidence risks for CVDs generally, including coronary heart disease, stroke, and heart failure. The risk of CVD increased with increasing BMI, and was highest among those with a BMI of 35 kgm² or higher.

Positive Association between BMI and CVD Risk

The study found a positive association between BMI during early adulthood and the risk of CVD. This means that people with a higher BMI in early adulthood were more likely to develop CVD later in life.

High Blood Pressure Risk with High BMI

In addition to CVD, high blood pressure in young adults may lead to an increased risk of kidney disease, stroke, and heart failure. Therefore, maintaining a healthy BMI and blood pressure in early adulthood is crucial for long-term health outcomes.

Higher Cardiovascular Event Risk with Low BMI

Interestingly, the study also found that the risk of major cardiovascular events was higher among patients with a lower BMI. This suggests that being underweight may also be a risk factor for CVD.
