Manchester City have responded strongly to their recent Champions League setback, securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the first 2023/24 FA Cup semi-final at Etihad Stadium.
Despite fielding a somewhat fatigued team, City demonstrated their resilience and determination to edge past a resilient Chelsea side.
The match proved to be a tense and closely fought affair, with both teams creating chances but failing to capitalize early on.
However, the deadlock was finally broken in the 73rd minute. Nicolas Jackson, who has enjoyed a breakout season with the Blues, found himself with a glorious opportunity but squandered his chance. This proved costly as City regrouped and launched a swift counterattack.
The hosts made the most of the Chelsea error, with Riyad Mahrez drilling home the winning goal. The Algerian winger's strike sent the Etihad Stadium crowd into raptures and gave City a deserved advantage heading into the second leg.
Chelsea will now face a daunting task when they host the return fixture. The Blues will need to overturn the deficit if they hope to reach the FA Cup final.
